What is a Bell Jar?

The Bell Jar along with being the name of my blog is also the title of my favorite book by Sylvia Plath. To me the bell jar represents the confines of social pressure. Sometimes we all feel suffocated by the bell jar. The bell jar can represent many things: a thankless 9-5 job, a loveless marriage, unappreciative children, increasing debt, our insecurities, or need for acceptance. Whatever your bell jar is, we all need distractions to get us through it, get out of it, or forget we are in it.

I am constantly on the look out for the next distraction and hopefully I will help you find some distractions of your own.

A little about me: I am a 28 year-old eighth grade English teacher in a small town in New England. I may be one of the only eighth grade teachers that can recite every Lil' Kim lyric and wears four different eye shadows to work. However, I have my BA in English and currently working toward my MAT in Teaching. In my spare time (when I am not teaching, preparing to teach, grading work I already taught or taking classes on how to be a better teacher) I like to ready trashy vampire books, obsessing over MAC, Lush and Coach products as well as trying to lose a few more ounces before my next weight watchers weigh in- yes I said weight watchers!

I have been trying to write a memoir for many years but can never stay focused long enough to complete a full thought (all those damn distractions). I am hoping that this blog (that my friend Jen inspired me to create see her blog at jennyjen813@blogspot.com) will help me fulfill my need to write, share, and complete my thoughts. This blog will be my general ramblings, venting, observations and opinions about a number of topics including literature, shopping, teaching, weight loss, as well as my favorite (or least favorite) products or current "distractions" from my bell jar.

Food for thought (since I already used all my points for today):

"And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt." -The Journals of Sylvia Plath, Smith College 1950-1955, p83.)
